Configure-Able Infrastructures Workshop

These collaborative workshops were organized with NEoN digital to share some queer, feminist and crip practices towards network infrastructures. In these workshops I collaborated with MELT and members of SysterServer to run two workshops and share how collective access can be understood and actioned within digital networks.

Due to a desire to run these workshops online and through Free Libre Open Source Softwar (FLOSS) these workshops also offered up a number of misfittings around how FLOSS imagines and makes room for accessibility. This came from the realization that in the context of this workshop where we needed automated captions, there were no easily accessible FLOSS softwares that could meet these requirements. From this misfitting we emerged an understanding of how FLOSS does not make room or time for accessibility, neither does it imagine it as essential.

From this friction the workshop also made Wiggle Room to improvise and hack together an automated live captioning setup that made room for everyone to meet through FLOSS online, but also for people to setup their own local live captioning software on their computer if they wanted it. This improvised setup even though being on individuals computers was intentionally felt out and actioned through collective sense making and interdependent action.

Improvised Captions

This entry shares the improvised auto-captioning software that we hacked together for the workshop so that we could try to make the workshops FLOSS video calls accessible.
